Driving out to the KZN Midlands is always a special outing for me. I love the scenic open spaces of the outdoors along with the road tripping customs of stopping off the beaten track for eats, refreshments and other breaks.
This last mini trip brought me to the picturesque town of Hilton; 98km from Durban and home to The Jackie Cameron School of Food & Wine, which is the reason for my visit.
Along with help from students, close friends and family, Jackie put together what I can only describe as the best “High Tea” I have ever attended. The auspicious occasion marked the celebration and launch of her most recent book, Baking with Jackie Cameron.

The book launch, attended by approximately 100+ guests was hosted in the actual school. Boasting beautiful open spaces, high ceilings, a thatched roof and enormous grand tables, visitors were treated not only to an incredible assortment of bakes and cakes, all from Jackie’s new book, but also to the cool tunes of the grand piano played by Nicky, a truly talented pianist.  He played the entire afternoon without using sheet music.

With a roaring fire crackling in the conservatory, guests gathered around as Jackie delivered a heartwarming thanks to all those involved in the formation of her new book. This most recent rendition is based on the home. Tried and tested recipes straight from Jackie’s kitchen grace the pages of this beautiful book. The recipes are easy to follow; even the children and teens can be involved in creating gourmet delights for the family. Jackie has mentioned that each recipe has a new and exciting twist to the standard conventional recipe. For example, the twist in Jackie’s infamous chocolate cake now has a hint of carrot and then there’s one of my favourites, a delicious Granadilla Meringue Pie. Enough recipe leakage; if you want to know more, you’re going to have to go out and purchase your copy which is retailing at R290.00 and available from leading news agencies.

A Sunday morning comprising of crisp country air, decadent indulgences, coffee drinking, picture taking, tweeting, instagramming and vegetating in front of a roaring fire was just what my body and soul needed. Thank you Jackie for including me in your special book launch morning.
