I genuinely thought I had “curried” everything that possibly could be curried until I recently attended a dinner hosted by Indian friends. Amongst a variety of scrumptious dishes being served was a pot of delicious boerewors curry. I was promptly inspired and rapidly processing my next recipe development project. Needless to say, the curry was mouthwatering. The secret, which I was told, was in the quality of the boerewors being curried. With this in mind, I already knew which brand I was going to use since it has been a family favourite for many many years. There is only one boerewors that stands out for me and that is Checkers SA Championship boerewors.

This is one of the reasons I love getting out to eat. Be it at a restaurant, at friends or family, food inspiration is of abundance, especially amongst different cultures, and this particular recipe is a classic example of two cultures coming together in one pot and creating a very tasty meal.
Boerewors Curry
Ingredients needed:
500g – 700g pack of boerewors cut into 2cm chunks
50g butter
50ml olive oil
1 onion, diced
1 carrot, peeled and grated
1tbsp chopped up fresh jalapeno
3 sticks of cinnamon
1 clove of garlic, crushed
2ml ground ginger
5ml medium curry powder
5ml each of ground cumin and coriander
250g baby tomatoes
60ml sugar
80ml chutney
1 tin mild chakalaka
1 tin tomato puree
In a large pot, melt the butter and add the olive oil. Add the onion, carrot, jalapeno, cinnamon sticks and garlic and saute till onions are transparent. Remove from the pot and set, removing the cinnamon sticks which is no longer needed. In the same pot, add the boerewors chunks and fry till browned and cooked through. Once boerewors is cooked, add the remaining ingredients including the onion mix that was set aside. Combine well and allow to simmer for about 20 minutes stirring periodically to ensure that the curry is not sticking to the pot. Once the curry is done you can serve with either rice or mashed potato.
