Unquestionably, most South African households have their own “special” crunchie recipe; a delicious oat biscuit passed down from generation to generation.
Made from real butter, oats and sugar, this recipe can be built on by adding raisins, nuts or chocolate chips.  With such versatility you could let your imagination run wild.
Oat-biscuits

You will need:

1 cup flour
1 cup castor sugar
1 cup desiccated coconut
2 cups oats
pinch of salt
200g butter
2 Tbsp golden syrup
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp vanilla essence

Method:

1. Combine dry ingredients and set aside
2. In a small pot, melt the butter and golden syrup
3. Remove from heat and add bicarb of soda and essence
4. Add butter mixture to dry ingredients and combine well
5. Press mixture into 23 x 23cm baking pan
6. Bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 12-15 minutes
7. Remove from oven, cut into bite size blocks and cool
